Being human with other human beings matters, reckons Hugh. He invented the term “social objects” (or “sharing device” if that’s easier) to highlight the marketing opportunity online.
Traditional advertising doesn’t work very well. Sure, it tries, and tries hard, but most of the time, it fails. It fails far worse now than it ever did during the golden era of TV or print. Those days are gone. We live in The Internet Era now.
Old, traditional advertising was all about creating messages for the media, not about creating social objects for the people using the media. “Social Objects” is what makes the Internet work, what makes the Internet possible.
Without the social objects, there would simply be no World Wide Web.
“Social Objects are the future of marketing,” says Hugh. We agree.

Rohit has written one of the simplest and most important marketing books. A book that will make you nod knowingly, and a book most will then do little with afterwards, and therein lies the opportunity. It’s a complex marketing landscape now and brands need to be talked about to be successful, so be worth talking about. How do you do that? Read his book, starting with this quote:
“The trick to marketing is to have something so cool, you’d want to talk about it even if you weren’t in the business.”

Because the head of the biggest corporation in the world says things like this:
“Sometimes when you innovate, you make mistakes. It is best to admit them quickly, and get on with improving your other innovations.”
“Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren’t used to an environment where excellence is expected.”
“It comes from saying no to 1,000 things to make sure we don’t get on the wrong track or try to do too much.”
